- The PDP has been embroiled in crisis since Wike suffered defeat during the presidential primary of the PDP in 2022.
Tonye Cole, the All Progressive Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Rivers, has alleged that Nyesom Wike’s actions within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are aimed to weaken the party.
Cole made this assertion during an interview with Adesuwa Giwa Osagie on the podcast, Untold Stories.
The PDP has faced internal turmoil since Wike’s loss in the 2022 presidential primary, where Atiku Abubakar secured 371 votes, surpassing Wike’s 237 votes.
Following his defeat, Wike joined forces with four PDP governors to form the G5, opposing Atiku’s victory in the 2023 presidential election.
The G5’s actions were seen as contributing to the PDP’s defeat, leading to a prolonged crisis within the party.
Segun Sowunmi, a PDP chieftain, noted that President Bola Tinubu’s appointment of Wike as FCT minister has created tension within the party.
Despite serving in an APC administration, Wike maintains he remains a PDP member.
Cole stated that the ruling party and Wike are aware of the situation, leaving it up to the main opposition party to take action.
“It is an open secret to everyone, it is not hidden. The role that he plays now in PDP is to weaken PDP to such an extent that the opposition to the APC moving forward is no longer there,” he said.
“PDP is aware of it. Everybody is aware of it. APC is aware of it. Everybody is aware of it. He is aware of it. Nobody is holding that secret, it is over there.”
“But somehow it amazes me when I think about it. It doesn’t seem as if PDP wants to do anything about it. It is their cross.”
