- NAFDAC refuted claims that it approved Lung Detox Tea, emphasizing that the product’s application was rejected due to harmful assertions
- The agency urged the public to disregard misleading information and report any suspicious claims or products through official channels
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has refuted claims circulating on social media that it approved a herbal tea purported to promote smoking as healthy.
In a statement released on Saturday via its official X handle, NAFDAC Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, dismissed the allegations, clarifying that the product in question, Lung Detox Tea, or any similar product marketed under the claim of making smoking healthy, was never approved.
“The agency has been made aware of a misleading video alleging that NAFDAC approved a herbal product claiming that ‘smoking is healthy’ when used with their product. NAFDAC wishes to state that this claim is false and completely unfounded categorically,” the statement read.
Prof. Adeyeye explained that the product registration application was outrightly rejected due to its dangerous and unsubstantiated claims.
“The product, Lung Detox Tea, Lungitox (Smokers Pride), or any similar product, is not registered by NAFDAC. The application was rejected because the claim that smoking could be made healthy is not supported by science and poses a significant public health risk,” she added.
NAFDAC emphasized its dedication to safeguarding public health by approving only safe, effective products supported by scientific evidence.
“We condemn any attempt to mislead or endanger the public with false claims. The public is advised to disregard this video and report any suspicious claims or products to the Agency through our official channels,” the statement concluded.
