A Nigerian national has been arrested in Delhi, India, for allegedly duping an Indian woman out of millions of rupees through a fake matrimonial profile.
Johnson, 40, was apprehended by police in Rajnandgaon, Chhattisgarh, for cheating the woman of ₹15,72,000 (approximately ₦9,100,000) under the pretense of marriage.
According to police, Johnson created a fake profile on a matrimonial website, claiming to be a UK-based businessman. He allegedly contacted the victim through an associate, requesting money to exchange UK currency.
The victim, who lodged a complaint with the Dongargarh Police cyber cell, realized she had been scammed when Johnson’s phone was switched off.
Police raided Johnson’s Delhi accommodation and arrested him, recovering a laptop and four mobile phones. His bank account has been frozen.
Johnson, who has been living in Delhi despite his expired visa and passport, is suspected of cheating multiple women. Police are conducting further investigations.
