- According to Maiha, the government aims to enforce regulations strictly and conduct nationwide vaccinations of animals
Nigeria’s federal government has announced plans to reform the country’s milk collection mechanisms and inspect the entire value chain.
Minister of Livestock Development, di Maiha, made the announcement at the 2024 edition of the Continuing Education Programme for Veterinary Professionals in Abuja.
According to Maiha, the government aims to enforce regulations strictly and conduct nationwide vaccinations of animals. He assured that the government is committed to addressing issues such as livestock migration, animal health, food, and water, as well as breed improvement.
The minister also commended states that have established ministries for livestock development, describing it as a demonstration of support for the presidential initiative to establish the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development.
Maiha emphasized that the existence of livestock ministries in states would facilitate policy coordination, programmes, and actions, ultimately accelerating the development of the sector. He urged states without livestock ministries to establish them as soon as possible.
The first National Council on Livestock Development is set to have representations from all state ministries for livestock development, with the aim of standardizing domestic production of livestock and related products to access global markets.
