  • Former Kano Governor Ibrahim Shekarau urged Nigerians to prioritize competence and capability when selecting a presidential candidate for 2027
  • Shekarau emphasized that electing leaders based on regional sentiments threatens good governance and national progress, advocating for issue-based politics

Former Kano State Governor Malam Ibrahim Shekarau has urged Nigerians to prioritize competence and capability over regionalism in selecting the country’s president in the 2027 general election.

Speaking during an interview with Channels Television, Shekarau emphasized that electing a leader based on regional sentiments poses a significant threat to good governance and national progress.

“The choice of president in 2027 should be based on competence and the ability to deliver on the mandate, not on where the candidate comes from,” Shekarau stated.

The former governor’s remarks come amid ongoing debates about power rotation between Nigeria’s North and South, a historically significant topic in the country’s political landscape.

Agitations for a shift of power back to the North are gaining traction ahead of the 2027 polls. However, some political leaders, including the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, have urged patience, suggesting the North wait until 2031, after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu completes a potential second term.

Shekarau advocated for political parties to prioritize a transparent and merit-based process in selecting their candidates.

“Political parties should establish a clear system for selecting the most competent candidates,” he said. “This will enable Nigerians to make informed decisions and choose the most suitable individual to lead as president.”
