- Banwo & Ighodalo announced legal action against Jarrett Tenebe for allegedly defamatory comments about Asue Ighodalo, demanding a retraction
- The firm condemned Tenebe’s statements as libelous and issued a three-day ultimatum for withdrawal or face formal court proceedings
Banwo & Ighodalo, a leading legal firm, has announced its intention to take legal action against Jarrett Tenebe, Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State, over allegedly defamatory statements made against Asue Ighodalo, the firm’s founding partner and governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State.
In a letter dated December 18, 2024, signed by Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Abimbola Akeredolu, the firm condemned Tenebe’s comments, calling them “libelous, reckless, and unfounded.”
The comments include accusations that Ighodalo “stole 21 government vehicles” from the Edo State Government.
Banwo & Ighodalo highlighted that the allegations persist despite a December 11 letter demanding an immediate retraction and public apology. The legal team has issued a three-day ultimatum for Tenebe to withdraw the statements or face formal court proceedings.
In a statement from the Team Asue Media Organisation (TAMO), signed by Erhabor Emokpae, the accusations were dismissed as a deliberate smear campaign aimed at damaging Ighodalo’s reputation.
The statement clarified that Alaghodaro, a private-sector-driven initiative chaired by Ighodalo, was established to promote economic growth and investments in Edo State. TAMO emphasized that Ighodalo has consistently demonstrated integrity and selflessness, personally funding his activities during 16 years of public service, including his tenure as Chairman of Alaghodaro.
TAMO further described the allegations of vehicle theft as baseless, absurd, and lacking evidence.
Banwo & Ighodalo reiterated its commitment to seeking legal remedies should the defamatory statements remain unaddressed.
The firm emphasized the importance of curbing misinformation, which undermines public trust and weakens democratic institutions.
The legal firm urged all stakeholders to prioritize truth, integrity, and decency in public discourse, cautioning against the use of falsehoods for political gain.
