The House of Representatives has announced plans to present N704.91 million to President Bola Tinubu on December 31, 2024, to aid vulnerable Nigerians grappling with the economic hardship caused by the removal of the petrol subsidy.
The funds were raised following a resolution by lawmakers in July to slash 50% of their monthly salaries for six months. The motion was introduced by Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu during a plenary session on July 18, 2024.
Speaking on the proposal, Kalu stated:
“This government is doing its best, but one year is not enough to address the challenges of this country. I want to plead with our colleagues to sacrifice 50 per cent of our salary for a period of six months. Our salary is N600,000 a month.”
The initiative was part of efforts to address growing discontent over economic conditions and protests against bad governance.
During Thursday’s plenary, Speaker Tajudeen Abba confirmed the total amount raised and emphasised the lawmakers’ commitment to alleviating hardship among citizens.
“If you recall, about five months ago, we decided to contribute half of our salaries to address the critical needs of the Nigerian people. I am happy to inform you that so far, we have contributed N704,907,578.82,” Abba said.
He further disclosed plans to deliver the funds to President Tinubu for distribution among those most in need.
“The contributions you made highlight the steadfastness and dedication of members to addressing the critical needs of Nigerians,” the Speaker added.
This gesture comes as the government continues to face criticism over its handling of the economy following the subsidy removal.
