The website of the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has been hacked, the agency disclosed on Wednesday.

The security breach is the latest in the spate of cyber attacks on websites of public parastatals.

The NBS is the federal agency that collects, analyses and disseminates statistical data in Nigeria.

In a statement on Wednesday raising alarm over the cyber attack, the bureau said it was addressing the situation and working to recover the website.

“This is to inform the public that the NBS Website has been hacked and we are working to recover it.”

“Please disregard any message or report posted until the website is fully restored. Thank you,” the agency disclosed in a post on its X page on Wednesdaym

Checks on the NBS website at 9:45 p.m., showed a largely blank page with the inscription, “Page Hacked”.

The websites of some ministries and parastatals have also come under cyber attacks in recent times.

In March, when FIJ reported that a private website XpressVerify.com had free access to the National Identification Numbers (NINs) and personal details of registered Nigerians.

Due to the incessant cyber threats, the federal government had issued at least 33 cyberattack advisories in the past year.

Cyber security platform provider, Check Point Software Technologies, said it conducted checks which revealed the rise in cyber attacks on Nigerian industries.

According to the platform, Nigeria ranked 19th in the global rankings for cyber attacks in July 2024, adding that government agencies encounter 1,791 attacks every week.
