- North Central PDP leaders urged support from other zones to complete ousted Chairman Iyorchia Ayu’s tenure, emphasizing party unity and adherence
- The communique called for necessary sacrifices to restore goodwill and cohesion within the PDP, stressing the importance of competent leadership
Leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from the North Central zone convened in Abuja on Tuesday, reiterating their demand to complete the tenure of ousted National Chairman, Dr. Iyorchia Ayu, who hails from the region.
After Ayu’s removal, Ambassador Umar Damagum has served as Acting National Chairman. However, efforts to convene a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting to appoint a substantive replacement have reportedly been stalled by the party’s National Working Committee (NWC).
In a communique issued after their meeting, North Central stakeholders appealed to other geopolitical zones within the party to support their bid to retain the chairmanship position until the tenure initially held by Ayu is completed.
The meeting was attended by prominent party leaders, including Plateau State Governor Caleb Muftwang, former Senate Presidents David Mark and Bukola Saraki, Senate Minority Leader Senator Abba Moro (Benue South), Senator Gabriel Suswam, Jonah Jang, Abdulfatah Ahmed, Babangida Aliyu, Idris Wada, Prof. Jerry Gana, Senator Dino Melaye, and others.
The communique emphasized adherence to the party’s constitution and called on the leadership to restore unity and trust within the PDP:
“The party is guided by its own constitution at all times. Therefore, the leadership of the party needs to rise to the occasion to restore goodwill and cohesion in the party by making necessary sacrifices and compromises to rebuild confidence and unity,” it read.
The stakeholders reaffirmed their commitment to the party’s success and consensus-building within the North Central zone, stating they are united to “preserve the PDP as a veritable platform for good governance in Nigeria.”
