Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has accused President Bola Tinubu’s government of failing to secure the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) website, which was allegedly hacked.

Atiku described this incident as yet another troubling development under the Tinubu administration. He said the claim adds to the negative issues linked to the current government.

Earlier this week, the NBS released a shocking report revealing grim crime statistics. The report, titled The Crime Experienced and Security Perception Survey (CESPS) 2024, showed that from May 2023 to April 2024, 614,937 Nigerians were killed.

It also reported that 2,235,954 people were kidnapped, with a total of N2.2 trillion paid in ransom—averaging N2.7 million per case.

In a statement issued by his Media Office in Abuja, Atiku emphasized the critical role of reliable data in national development. He expressed concern over the credibility of the NBS data following the alleged hack.

Atiku stated, “The claim that the National Bureau of Statistics website was hacked is deeply troubling. This comes alongside the troubling stats released in the CESPS report, raising questions about the administration’s credibility.”

He further pointed out the suspicious timing of the alleged hack, which occurred soon after the release of the damning report. Atiku suggested that such coincidences could lead to doubts about the authenticity of future data.

“These are challenging times for Nigeria,” he added. “It’s crucial to ensure that this situation is not a deliberate attempt to undermine the integrity of data used for planning, development, and research.”

Atiku urged the government to prioritize data security to maintain trust and foster development.
