- The League of Northern Democrats urged amendments to President Tinubu’s tax reform bills, citing concerns over regional favoritism and governance issues
- Senator Ibrahim Shekarau emphasized the need for inclusivity and fair resource distribution in the proposed tax reforms to enhance economic stability
The League of Northern Democrats (LND), chaired by former Kano State Governor Senator Ibrahim Shekarau, has called for amendments to President Bola Tinubu’s Tax Reform Bills currently under review in the National Assembly.
The group made this demand on Thursday in Abuja during the presentation of a report by a technical committee tasked with analyzing the controversial tax reform bills.
The proposed reforms have sparked nationwide debates, with significant opposition emerging from the North.
Critics, including governors and regional leaders, argue that the bills disproportionately favour Lagos State and other narrow interests, potentially marginalizing the North.
Speaking at the event, Shekarau highlighted the importance of addressing the concerns raised by the technical committee.
He warned of severe implications if the socio-cultural and governance issues identified in the report are ignored.
“The LND sees the tax reform bills as a chance to enhance Nigeria’s economic stability. However, this must go hand in hand with addressing constitutional, socio-cultural, and governance concerns,” Shekarau stated.
He urged the National Assembly to make comprehensive amendments to ensure inclusivity, national cohesion, and fair resource distribution.
The committee’s report, which underscores the need for equitable tax policies, was presented by its chairman, Senator Bala ibn Na’Allah, during the ongoing event in Abuja.
The LND’s stance adds to the growing calls for a thorough review of the tax reform bills to balance regional interests and promote national unity.
