The Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, has approved an increase in the retirement age for academic staff at state-owned tertiary institutions from 60 to 65 years.
Governor Sani signed an Executive Order following a meeting with the leadership of academic unions from all state-owned tertiary institutions.
The state Commissioner for Education, Prof. Muhammad Sani-Bello, announced the announcement during a media briefing in Kaduna.
According to Sani-Bello, the unions presented five major demands during the meeting. Governor Sani assured them the retirement age issue would be resolved within 48 hours.
The commissioner stated: “The unions raised five key requests, the first being outstanding salaries and welfare benefits for staff. His Excellency has agreed to address these payments despite the financial challenges the state is facing. The payments will be staggered until the liabilities are fully settled.”
Sani-Bello also mentioned that funding for tertiary institutions was a significant concern. Since implementing the Treasury Single Account (TSA) system, these institutions have faced challenges accessing funds.
He explained: “The institutions highlighted the need for adequate funding to handle their daily operations. His Excellency has agreed to share the revenue generated by these institutions as a temporary solution. A fair revenue-sharing formula will be established by the first quarter of next year.”
The governor’s decisions aim to improve staff welfare and ensure better operations at the state’s tertiary institutions, reflecting his commitment to addressing the concerns of the education sector.
