Ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, 78 organizations have applied to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for political party registration.

A senior INEC official, speaking anonymously, confirmed the development to the Sunday Tribune in Abuja. The official explained that the commission is currently reviewing the applications to determine which groups meet the set requirements for registration.

The evaluation process involves verifying if the applicants fulfil criteria such as having a nationwide structure and a National Executive Committee (NEC) that reflects Nigeria’s Federal Character principle.

Additionally, the group’s constitution and manifesto must align with the objectives outlined in the Nigerian Constitution.

The commission will also ensure that the party’s name, acronym, motto, and symbol comply with the provisions of the Constitution and the Electoral Act.

INEC’s guidelines specify that an association’s NEC must include representatives from at least 24 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

Furthermore, the group’s documents must adhere to Chapter II of the Nigerian Constitution, which covers the Fundamental Objectives and Directive Principles of State Policy.

Any false claims or duplicate applications will lead to immediate disqualification, according to INEC regulations.

In recent years, political party registration has grown significantly. The number of political associations applying to INEC had risen sharply since July last year when the Supreme Court reinstated the Youth Party after its deregistration.

Amid tensions within major opposition parties, sources suggest that some politicians are exploring coalitions to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress in the upcoming elections.

These coalitions may emerge under new or existing political parties, offering alternatives to the fractured opposition.
