- The ex-vice president said the twin stampedes which occurred a few days after the devastating loss of lives in Ibadan, is the reason his anguish is all the more unbearable.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has expressed his condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in the stampedes in Anambra and Abuja.
Atiku took to his official social media handle on X to call for improved crowd control measures during large gatherings.
The tragic incidents occurred during food distribution events in Okija, Anambra State, and Abuja, resulting in significant loss of life and injuries.
The former VP described receiving the news of the stampedes as heartbreaking, stating, “It is with a heavy heart and deep sorrow that I receive yet again the heartbreaking news of lives lost in tragic stampedes.”
He emphasized the need for event organizers to prioritize crowd safety, saying, “It is imperative that those entrusted with the organization of such large-scale events take the utmost care in crowd management.”
Atiku also recalled a similar incident in Ibadan, Oyo State, where about 35 lives were lost, mostly children, during a funfair.
The former vice president expressed his anguish over the repeated incidents, saying his sorrow is compounded by the recent devastating loss of lives in Ibadan.
Atiku offered his condolences to the families of the victims, stating, “On behalf of my family, I extend my sincerest condolences to those who have lost loved ones in today’s tragic events.”
He added, “Our thoughts and prayers are with the grieving families, that they may find solace and with the departed, that they may rest in eternal peace.”
