- The president demanded a “credit” for “managing” the country’s debt profile.
President Bola Tinubu has expressed optimism about Nigeria’s progress, stating the country is “moving forward” despite facing significant challenges.
Tinubu made these remarks during his first presidential media chat since taking office on May 29, 2023.
The president requested recognition for his efforts in managing Nigeria’s debt profile, highlighting notable improvements.
Tinubu stated, “Nigeria is on the path of recovery,” but acknowledged that a complete turnaround cannot be achieved within a single year.
He noted, “About borrowing, today from 98 percent of debt service, I brought it down to 68 percent—or thereabouts. Give credit.”
Tinubu emphasized that his administration has made strides in managing the country’s finances, exiting previous problems, and increasing funding for development and revenue distribution.
He also highlighted the autonomy granted to local governments, citing his experience in creating 37 local government development areas in Lagos.
Tinubu reiterated, “I am drawing water from a dry well, and Nigeria is moving forward.”
He emphasized that his administration’s efforts are focused on restoration and hope, with Nigeria on the path to recovery, despite criticism.
Tinubu clarified that he is not making excuses, considering his administration has only been in office for 18 months.
