University of Ibadan's Chineke Ugochukwu Wins 8th Super Bowl Debate Competition

Chineke Ugochukwu, a University of Ibadan student, has won the 8th Super Bowl Debate Competition. The event occurred at the Alumni Hall, University of Ibadan, highlighting exceptional debating talent.

The competition, themed “This is Nigeria,” attracted students from 13 institutions across Oyo State. Participants showcased their speaking and critical thinking abilities. Schools included Abiola Ajimobi Technical University, Federal School of Survey Oyo, Oyo State College of Agriculture and Technology Igboora, and Dominican University.

Ugochukwu secured first place with 68.1%, beating Jacintha Nwachukwu from Dominican University, who scored 66.9%, and Kolade Daniella from Abiola Ajimobi Technical University, who earned 63.2%.

During his address, Hon. Victor Olojede, the Senior Special Assistant to the Oyo State Governor on Students’ Affairs, stressed the value of empowering young leaders.

Dr. Bisi Olawuyi, the event convener and Head of Communication and Language Arts at the University of Ibadan, said the platform isn’t just about addressing Nigeria’s problems but finding solutions through youth perspectives.

Fisayo Soyombo, an investigative journalist and former Super Bowl contestant, delivered the keynote speech. He addressed Nigeria’s systemic corruption and called for a return to values like hard work and dignity of labour.

Winners received cash prizes and trophies. Ugochukwu earned ₦200,000, Nwachukwu ₦150,000, and Daniella ₦100,000. The event, held after a four-year break, enjoyed renewed support from the Oyo State government. Plans for future collaborations are already underway.
