Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has approved a new monthly stipend of N250,000 for traditional rulers in the state, set to begin in December 2024.

In a statement by the governor’s media aide, Ferdinand Ekeoma, the Chairperson of the Abia State Council of Traditional Rulers, Eze Linus Nto Mba, expressed appreciation for the gesture. Mr Mba, speaking on behalf of the State Executive and the traditional rulers’ council, confirmed that the stipend would be paid to all traditional rulers, except those in Aba South, who will receive a different amount.

He clarified that the N250,000 stipend is separate from the N150,000 “Christmas package” recently approved by Governor Otti for over 500 traditional rulers in the state.

“The Council expresses gratitude that the Governor would, from this month of December 2024, begin to pay N250,000 monthly stipend to every Eze in Abia State, except the traditional rulers in Aba South,” Mr Mba said.

Mr Mba also highlighted the strong relationship between the traditional institution and the governor, noting that past administrations had not shown such respect to the traditional rulers. He assured that the traditional rulers would continue to support the governor’s efforts to combat crime and improve security across the state.
