Former President Goodluck Jonathan has called for support and prayers for the victims of the recent tragic stampedes in Ibadan, Abuja, and Okija. These incidents occurred during the distribution of palliatives and resulted in significant loss of life and injuries.
In his Christmas message on Monday in Abuja, Jonathan expressed deep sadness over the events and urged authorities to implement measures to prevent such tragedies.
“As we navigate this painful period, I encourage all Nigerians to show compassion and solidarity, especially during this festive season,” he stated.
Jonathan also highlighted that Christmas is a time for love, unity, and care, urging everyone to foster peace and harmony within their communities.
Meanwhile, the South-West Governors’ Forum extended condolences to Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State over the children’s carnival stampede in Ibadan.
The incident, which took place last Wednesday at Islamic High School, Basorun, claimed the lives of at least 35 children.
Chairman of the forum and Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, visited Makinde on Monday to convey the sympathies of the forum.
Abiodun described the stampede as tragic, noting that although the event was well-intentioned, it resulted in an unfortunate outcome.
He advised that non-governmental organizations and charities collaborate with government authorities when planning similar events to ensure safety and proper coordination.
In his response, Governor Makinde thanked his colleagues for their support during this difficult time.
Other members of the South-West Governors’ Forum include Governors Ademola Adeleke (Osun), Abiodun Oyebamiji (Ekiti), Lucky Ayedatiwa (Ondo), and Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos).
