- NBA Chairman Sulyman Kosemani emphasized the need for accountability, assuring legal support for the family of Tunji Abdulqodir, who died in custody
The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has voiced deep concern over the rising cases of civilian deaths at the hands of police officers in Kwara State.
The Chairman of the NBA Ilorin Branch, Sulyman Mohammed-Hassan Kosemani, expressed these concerns during a visit to the family of Tunji Abdulqodir.
Abdulqodir was allegedly tortured to death while in police custody over a debt of ₦220,000.
This tragic incident has sparked outrage and raised questions about the treatment of detainees in custody.
Kosemani highlighted that Abdulqodir’s death marked the third reported case this year involving police brutality leading to civilian deaths in the state.
He cited earlier incidents, including the killing of a student from Kwara State Polytechnic and another incident at Tanke Tipper Garage, both involving officers from the Ganmo Police Division.
“These cases reveal a troubling pattern of excessive force and a lack of accountability within our law enforcement agencies,” Kosemani said.
The NBA expressed alarm over these repeated violations of citizens’ rights and the failure to ensure their safety. The association assured Abdulqodir’s family that its human rights committee would provide legal support to ensure justice for his death.
The NBA delegation also met with officials of the Kwara State Police Command. During the visit, they communicated their resolve to pursue the case to its conclusion, ensuring accountability and justice for the deceased’s family.
The NBA’s actions underscore its commitment to addressing police misconduct and protecting the fundamental rights of Nigerians.
