- The initiative aims to produce 70% of the nation’s pharmaceutical needs locally by 2030
The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof Muhammad Pate, has announced that over 70 healthcare manufacturing companies are set to undertake 22 large-scale initiatives in Nigeria.
In a message shared on his X handle, Pate highlighted the alignment of these projects with President Bola Tinubu’s vision to transform Nigeria’s health sector from consumption-driven to a job-creating and value-adding model.
Since the October 2023 launch of the Presidential Initiative to Unlock the Healthcare Value Chain, the government has taken significant steps, including an executive order to boost local production of pharmaceuticals, test kits, and medical consumables.
Key achievements include a $1 billion MoU with Afreximbank and financing from the European Investment Bank to support healthcare investments. Partnerships with companies like Abbott Diagnostics and Siemens Healthineers have also been secured to establish manufacturing plants for diagnostic kits and ultrasound equipment in Nigeria.
The initiative aims to produce 70% of the nation’s pharmaceutical needs locally by 2030 and expand the life sciences workforce to 50,000 full-time employees, up from the current 20,000.
