At least 20 Nigerians have been extrajudicially killed in South Africa over the past year, according to Frank Onyewekelu, President of the Nigerian Citizens Association in South Africa.
The disturbing trend has sparked outrage, especially after the brutal killing of Julius Chukwunta in Johannesburg on December 7, 2024.
Chukwunta, a resident of Midrand, Johannesburg, was attacked by four men following an altercation at his complex entrance. His injuries, including severe trauma to his skull inflicted with a brick, ultimately led to his death on December 10. Despite being charged with murder, three of the attackers—Zimbabweans with South African residence permits—were granted bail of 10,000 rand each. The fourth suspect awaits a bail hearing.
Onyewekelu criticised the Nigerian High Commission for failing to protect its citizens and ensure justice. He emphasised the need for due process, stating, “If anyone commits a crime, they should face trial, not extrajudicial killing.”
The Nigerian government has repeatedly condemned the killings, which have claimed 116 Nigerian lives over two years. Many of these incidents allegedly involve South African police.
Chukwunta’s death underscores the ongoing risks faced by Nigerians in South Africa and the need for stronger diplomatic and legal measures to address these violations. The case has been adjourned until February 2025.
