- The National Sports Commission Chairman, Mallam Shehu Dikko, rewarded the home-based Super Eagles with ₦10 million for their 3-1 victory over Ghana
- Dikko’s donation highlights his commitment to Nigerian football, as he personally took over the reward initially pledged by NSC Director General
The Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Mallam Shehu Dikko, has rewarded the home-based Super Eagles with ₦10 million following their impressive 3-1 victory over Ghana in Uyo.
The win secured Nigeria’s 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualification.
The generous pledge was initially announced by NSC Director General, Hon. Bukola Olopade, who revealed that he intended to reward the team if they emerged victorious personally. However, Mallam Dikko stepped in to donate himself, showcasing his commitment to Nigerian football.
“Before the game, I made a personal pledge to reward the team if they won,” Hon. Olopade explained. “When I discussed this with Mallam Dikko, he immediately supported the idea but insisted on taking up the gesture himself as a show of solidarity and appreciation for the players’ efforts.”
He added, “It was a heartfelt moment that truly shows his passion for Nigerian football and the athletes representing our country. His generosity has further inspired the team, and we are incredibly grateful for his leadership.”
The Super Eagles delivered a dominant performance at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium. Sodiq Ismaila scored in the 18th minute, followed by goals from Nduka Junior and Saviour Isaac in the 21st and 25th minutes, respectively.
Although Ghana’s Stephen Amenkona managed a consolation goal in the 71st minute, the Nigerian team controlled the game and secured a deserved victory.
The 2025 CHAN tournament, dedicated to players competing within their home continents, is set to take place from February 1 to 28 and will be co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.
