Former Governor of Jigawa State, Alhaji Sule Lamido, has accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of not being transparent about the true state of Nigeria and the actions of his administration.
Lamido, a prominent member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), also criticized former President Muhammadu Buhari for allegedly adopting a similar lack of transparency during his tenure.
Speaking on the BBC Hausa program Gane Mini Hanya, Lamido said that both the Buhari and Tinubu administrations prioritized propaganda over openness, a stark contrast to the approach of the PDP when it was in power.
“Buhari’s and Tinubu’s governments are not being transparent with Nigerians, unlike when PDP was in power, where everything was transparent and open to all Nigerians,” he stated.
He added, “But with the coming of Buhari, deception and propaganda became tools for running the government.”
Lamido specifically criticized Tinubu’s loan requests, accusing the government of misrepresenting Nigeria’s financial situation. He questioned the logic behind seeking loans despite a reported budget surplus.
“If Nigerians are being told the truth, then nothing is wrong. But how would you budget ₦30 trillion, generate ₦50 trillion, and then request a loan when you have a surplus of ₦20 trillion?” he asked, referencing last year’s budget figures.
The former governor described the government’s financial management as reckless and selfish, which he argued is unacceptable globally.
“This recklessness and clear-cut selfishness is not done anywhere in the world, yet you find (some) Nigerians supporting it. Visit social media and see how APC is being criticized, being referred to as a calamity, yet you find some protecting it,” Lamido said.
