Vice President Kashim Shettima has extended heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Sokoto State over the tragic killing of about 10 civilians during an airstrike targeted at the Lakurawa terrorist group in Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa communities, Silame Local Government Area.
The incident occurred on December 25, 2024, when the military conducted an operation aimed at a logistics base of the Lakurawa insurgents in the area. Unfortunately, some civilians were caught in the crossfire, leading to fatalities and injuries.
Air Vice Marshal Olusola Akinboyewa, the spokesperson for the Nigerian Air Force, stated that the airstrike was carried out based on credible intelligence and aerial surveillance.
He assured the public that reports of civilian casualties would be thoroughly investigated.
In a statement by his spokesperson, Stanley Nkwocha, Vice President Shettima expressed deep regret over the incident and acknowledged the pain and loss experienced by the affected families.
He said, **“I would like to extend my deep sympathies and condolences to the Government and people of Sokoto State, particularly the families of those who lost their lives during the coordinated joint operation by the air and land components of Operation Fansan Yamma to eliminate the Lakurawa terrorist group.
“I must say we are sorry and dismayed at the civilian casualties incurred and the excruciating pain that ensues in these extremely difficult times. I call for understanding, especially when our gallant men of the Armed Forces are fighting and paying the supreme price to protect the lives of those caught in the crossfire.”**
The Vice President also urged continued support for the military, emphasizing the importance of accurate intelligence to avoid such incidents in the future.
“On behalf of our gallant officers, I apologize for this great loss. I urge you to continue to assist our brave officers with useful information to ensure they maintain accuracy and precision in their operations. Let me assure you that the administration of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is committed to eradicating terrorism and creating a peaceful Nigeria for all citizens,” Shettima added.
Additionally, the Vice President led a condolence delegation to Jigawa State following the deaths of the mother and eldest son of Governor Alhaji Umar Namadi. Hajiya Mariam Namadi passed away on December 25, and within 24 hours, the governor’s son, Abdulwahab Namadi, also died.
Speaking in Hadejia, Jigawa State, Shettima said, “Death is an inevitable destiny hanging on everyone’s neck. We are all from Allah, and at the train station with our baggage waiting for the train. From where? From Allah, to where? To Allah. Our bags and baggage are our deeds in this world.”
He was accompanied by Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State, Senator Ibrahim Hassan Hadejia, the deputy chief of staff to the president, and other government officials.
