President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been urged to extend the tenure of Dr. Madein Oluwatoyin, the Accountant General of the Federation (AGF), to allow her to complete the impactful reforms she initiated.
The appeal came from over 40 civil society organizations, led by Global Gender Safety and Moral Development and the Competent Governance for Accountability and Civic Trust (CGACT), during a press conference in Abuja over the weekend.
Speaking on behalf of the coalition, Godwin Oghenero Erheriene, CEO of CGACT, praised Dr. Madein for her reforms, particularly her efforts to halt payments for projects yet to be awarded.
“This action saves the country from potential embarrassment and prevents unnecessary interest on undeployed funds,” he said.
The coalition also highlighted Dr. Madein’s administrative skills, crediting her with enhancing Nigeria’s global financial standing. “She demystified the Federation Accounts and Allocation Committee (FAAC), especially regarding revenue allocation to various government tiers,” the group noted.
Dr. Madein’s professionalism and transparency in managing government revenue transactions earned her significant recognition.
The coalition expressed concern over the underrepresentation of women in high-level government roles, stressing that the AGF’s position, created under Decree 43 of 1988, is reserved for exceptional professionals.
“Dr. Madein is a Fellow of the Association of Chartered and Certified Accountants (ACCA), UK, a member of the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria, and the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN),” the coalition emphasized.
The civil society groups thanked President Tinubu for reinstating Dr. Madein as the substantive AGF and noted her planned retirement in March 2025.
However, they appealed for extending her tenure to 2026 to allow her to stabilize the system further and support economic recovery.
“With the country facing significant economic challenges, extending her tenure would ensure continuity and progress,” they concluded.
