The Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I. Jibrin, has revealed the reasons behind his decision to sponsor 70 students for advanced studies in Artificial Intelligence (AI), Forensic Science, and Robotics abroad.

He described the initiative as a step towards addressing skill gaps and accelerating Nigeria’s development.

Speaking at the Malam Aminu Kano International Airport on Sunday, where he bid farewell to the beneficiaries travelling on Ethiopian Airlines, Barau emphasized the importance of education in solving the country’s challenges.

He also provided $200 to each student, underscoring his commitment to supporting their academic journey.

“One of the major issues in the northwestern part of this country is inadequate education for our youth,” Barau said. “Our youth population is an asset, but many lack proper education. Educating them is the number one solution to our problems.”

Barau highlighted the importance of human capital development in national progress. He explained that his initiative complements President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s efforts to improve educational access for disadvantaged youths.

The deputy Senate president also revealed plans to ensure students become self-reliant after their studies. “When they complete their programs, arrangements will be made to help them establish their businesses,” he stated.

Barau noted that this year’s 70 students, including 65 males and five females from Kano State’s three senatorial districts, is only the beginning. “This is the first batch, and we plan to make it an annual program,” he added.

The students, offered admission letters on September 9, 2024, will pursue degrees in AI, Cybersecurity, and Robotics at international institutions. They began boarding their flight at 1:20 PM on Sunday.
