- The move aims to reintegrate rehabilitated inmates into society while promoting justice and reform
Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has granted clemency to eight inmates at correctional centres in the state.
The announcement, made on New Year’s Day by the governor’s media aide, Uche Anichukwu, followed a letter dated December 31, 2024, addressed to the state’s Correctional Service Comptroller, Nicholas Obiako, and signed by Chief of Staff Barr Victor Udeh.
According to the statement, the governor exercised his constitutional prerogative of mercy under Section 212 of the 1999 Constitution, in consultation with the Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy.
The pardons, subject to a one-year parole, were granted to inmates who had served significant portions of their sentences and demonstrated reformation, as recommended by the Correctional Service and the Advisory Council. The council includes representatives from the Attorney-General’s office, the Nigerian Correctional Service, and organisations like CAPIO and CIDJAP.
