- Obi asked Tinubu to reduce the cost of governance, stressing that this would free up funds for vital development areas.
Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has urged President Bola Tinubu to take decisive action to address Nigeria’s pressing issues.
Obi, a former Anambra governor, shared his thoughts on Thursday during a press conference in Abuja, where he discussed the state of the nation.
To drive development, Obi advised Tinubu to reduce governance costs, freeing up funds for vital areas like security, health, and education.
Nigeria’s corruption levels remain high, mirroring the cost of governance, which has led to a surge in public debt under the current administration.
Obi emphasized the need for selfless leadership across government tiers and arms, stressing that this change must start at the top.
“From all indications, Nigeria urgently needs selfless and exemplary leadership across the three arms and tiers of government. However, this much-needed exemplary leadership must begin at the very top,” Obi said.
He quoted Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., “We are confronted with the fierce urgency of now. This is no time for apathy or complacency. This is a time for vigorous and positive actions.”
Obi proposed a visible reduction in governance costs and aggressive anti-corruption measures, ensuring proper investigations and recoveries of missing funds.
He condemned the widespread hardship, criticizing the alarming poverty and insecurity rates, and advocates for tax reform debates prioritizing production over taxation.
