- Akande emphasized collaboration between the president and governors is crucial for making food affordable and addressing Nigeria’s pressing issues
Former presidential aide Laolu Akande has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to confront corruption directly while state governors focus on reducing food inflation to alleviate poverty in Nigeria.
Speaking on Channels TV’s Sunrise Daily on Thursday, Akande emphasized the need for collaboration between the president and governors to address rising food prices, which he described as central to combating poverty.
“We need the highest level of urgency to make food more affordable. Collaboration between the president and governors is critical,” he stated.
Akande pointed out that agriculture, a key driver of food security, falls under the jurisdiction of state governments. He urged governors to lead efforts to boost agricultural productivity and lower food costs.
Reflecting on President Tinubu’s New Year message, Akande acknowledged a slight reduction in fuel prices but highlighted that food inflation remains a pressing issue. “Solving the food crisis will significantly reduce misery,” he noted.
He also criticized President Tinubu’s approach to tackling corruption, calling it insufficient. “The president seems hesitant to address the pervasive corruption in the country. Ignoring grand corruption will not work,” Akande stated.
On the proposed youth conference, Akande called for clarity and effective communication. He noted that the confab, seemingly inspired by last year’s #EndBadGovernance protests, must address critical societal issues related to politics and governance.
Turning to the power sector, Akande criticized the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, for not holding saboteurs accountable.
“The minister must ensure consequences for those sabotaging efforts to meet power targets,” he said, referencing last week’s failure to reach the 6,000MW target due to sabotage.
Akande concluded by urging leaders to inspire hope through clear communication and tangible progress.
He emphasized that addressing corruption, food inflation, and power supply issues would significantly improve the lives of Nigerians.
