- The agency said trafficking portend danger to the mostly unsuspecting victims who get lured into slavery and prostitution when they get to the country.
Officials of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, NiDCOM, in Jordan, have stepped in to rescue a 28-year-old Nigerian woman, Eniola Isaac, trafficked to Iraq.
This development comes after a report revealed that Eniola was deceived with false promises of a better life in Iraq.
After suffering abuse, physical assaults, and mistreatment from her Iraqi employer, Eniola pleaded with Nigerian authorities to help her return home.
Releasing an update on its official X handle, NiDCOM stated that Eniola’s situation highlights the alarming rise of Nigerian trafficking to Iraq through deceptive means.
“Eniola Isaac, a 28-year-old trafficked Nigerian girl in Iraq, is expected to return to Nigeria on January 3rd with the intervention of the officials of the Nigerian mission in Jordan, that oversees Iraq.
“Another case of a Nigerian who went to work in Iraq as a carer and was killed in suspicious circumstances is also being investigated.
“The Nigerian government has demanded an autopsy to determine the cause of death of the victim,” NiDCOM wrote.
NiDCOM also warned of deceitful agents luring young Nigerian women to Iraq with false promises, which often lead to slavery and prostitution.
