Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, has unveiled a petrol subsidy initiative to ease the financial burden on farmers in areas affected by Boko Haram insurgency.
The announcement was made on Friday in Bama town during the distribution of farm inputs to over 5,000 farmers displaced by the insurgency.
Zulum stated that petrol, which sells for N1,000 and N1,200 per litre in Maiduguri, will be subsidised to N600 per litre for irrigation farmers.
The subsidy is part of a broader strategy to boost food production and support livelihoods in communities recovering from years of conflict.
“One major challenge facing farming communities is the high fuel cost for irrigation. To address this, the government will procure and sell petrol at a subsidised rate of N600 per litre to farmers,” Zulum announced.
He directed the Commissioner for Agriculture to collaborate with the Brigade Commander to ensure timely delivery of the subsidised fuel to Bama town.
In addition to the petrol subsidy, Zulum distributed vital farming tools and materials, including:
- 2,000 bags of blended NPK fertilizer
- 1,000 water pumps
- 620 gasoline pumps
- 380 solar water pumps
- 1,000 sprayers
- 800 rolls of 2-inch flexible hose
- 1,000 litres of pesticides and seeds
To further aid irrigation farming, the state government has already constructed over 100 tube wells and approved the construction of an additional 250.
During his visit, Zulum also assessed ongoing reconstruction projects in Darajama and Goniri villages under Bama Local Government Area.
He expressed satisfaction with the quality of work and reiterated his administration’s commitment to ensuring the resettlement of displaced communities.
Zulum thanked the federal government for its support in the state’s reconstruction and resettlement efforts.
He emphasized that his administration would not tolerate any attempts to sabotage these initiatives, which are critical to rebuilding communities and restoring normalcy in the region.
