  • The Sokoto State government distributed 1,000 motorcycles and 500 tricycles to commercial riders at an 80% discount to enhance transportation
  • Beneficiaries paid significantly reduced prices, with monthly repayments set at N15,000 for tricycles and N5,000 for motorcycles after deposits

The Sokoto State government has distributed 1,000 motorcycles and 500 tricycles to commercial riders at an 80% discount.

Governor Ahmed Aliyu, while launching the initiative on Saturday, explained that the program aims to make transportation more accessible and affordable within the state.

It is also part of the government’s efforts to create jobs and improve the lives of residents and their families.

The tricycles, purchased at N3.6 million each, and motorcycles, valued at N1.3 million each, were offered at significantly reduced prices.

Beneficiaries paid N1 million for a tricycle and N300,000 for a motorcycle after an initial deposit of N150,000 and N50,000, respectively.

Monthly repayment terms were set at N15,000 for tricycles and N5,000 for motorcycles, with beneficiaries required to provide a guarantor.

Governor Aliyu, represented by his deputy, Engineer Idris Gobir, urged the recipients to charge affordable fares to reflect the government’s subsidy. He also warned against reselling the vehicles or violating the agreement.

“These machines are for the benefit of our people. Don’t sell them, and ensure your charges are affordable. For example, where others charge N100, we expect you to charge between N20 and N40, depending on the distance,” he said.

The chairman of the distribution committee, Ambassador Sahabi Gada, cautioned beneficiaries that defaulters would face penalties.

The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar, represented by Alhaji Rilwanu Bello, praised the government’s gesture and advised beneficiaries to comply with repayment terms.
