The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) denied claims that it intends to destroy over six million uncollected Permanent Voters’ Cards (PVCs) before the 2027 elections.
In a statement posted on its X (formerly Twitter) handle on Sunday night, the commission dismissed the reports as false and urged the public to disregard them.
INEC clarified, “Our attention has been drawn to a newspaper report alleging that the Commission plans to destroy over six million uncollected PVCs from the 2015 voter registration.
This report is incorrect. At no time did the Commission contemplate such an action.”
Rumours emerged from claims that INEC was considering a policy to withdraw and destroy uncollected PVCs for over a decade. It was alleged that this idea was part of 208 proposals from a review of the 2023 general elections.
INEC has rejected these allegations, reiterating its commitment to maintaining transparency and accountability in its operations.
The commission urged Nigerians to disregard the story and emphasized its focus on preparing for a credible and inclusive 2027 electoral process.
