The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) has decried the vandalisation of its Udemezue 11KV Feeder in Abakaliki, which has disrupted power supply to several areas in the city.
According to a statement on Sunday by EEDC’s Head of Corporate Communications, Emeka Ezeh, the incident occurred in the early hours of January 5, causing outages in Oroko-onuoha, Udensi, Kpirikpiri, Ogbaga Road, New Layout, Udemezue, Low-Cost Housing Estate, Hilltop Road, and other areas. Key establishments such as Amikaba, Siren Hotel, Unity FM, and several hotels were also affected.
Ezeh revealed that vandals stole 16 metres of underground 150mm² x 3-core armoured cable, leaving over 70 transformers without power. The damage was discovered at 2:40 a.m. during a patrol triggered by an abnormal feeder outage.
“We regret this unprecedented development and appeal to our customers for patience as we work to replace the stolen and damaged equipment,” Ezeh stated, assuring that power would be restored once repairs are completed.
He reaffirmed EEDC’s commitment to providing improved services despite the challenges posed by vandalism.
