- Security agencies in the federal capital territory (FCT) have arrested suspected vandals over the removal of sewage manhole covers in the city.
- This follows a trending video on social media where a resident recorded the suspects as they removed the manhole covers.
The replacement of sewage manhole covers stolen by vandals has begun, as directed by the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike.
According to Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant to the FCT Minister, several suspects involved in stealing manhole covers from Abuja highways have been arrested by the Federal Capital Territory Administration.
Investigations have revealed Abuja Steel Company as a major buyer of the stolen covers, with “exhibits of interest” seized and under police investigation.
Olayinka noted that recent arrests have provided valuable insights into other buyers involved in the vandalism, as stated in the “Update on Vandalisation of Sewage Manhole Covers on Abuja Highways” report.
Olayinka stated: “Abuja Steel Company, located along Abuja-Kaduna Road, has been identified as an alleged receiver of stolen manhole covers, with ‘exhibits of interest’ recovered and in police custody.”
“The company is under investigation for its role in the theft and melting of these covers,” Olayinka added.
Wike expressed disappointment, saying, “It’s disheartening that some individuals remove government-provided amenities, sell them, and disregard the danger posed to citizens.”
He emphasized that these acts are serious safety concerns, not just thefts.
Wike commended the citizen who shared a video leading to the arrests, calling it a “demonstration of patriotism” crucial for societal change.
Wike assured the public that stakeholders are working to eradicate vandalism and will keep citizens informed about developments.
