Daniel Bwala has said that his role in President Bola Tinubu’s media team was not a downgrade.
Tinubu appointed Bwala, Atiku Abubakar’s 2023 campaign spokesperson, as special adviser on public communications and media on November 14, 2023.
Bwala had later announced himself as the new presidential spokesman, filling a position vacant since Ajuri Ngelale’s exit.
Ngelale was the special adviser on media and publicity to the president.
Bayo Onanuga, special adviser to the president, issued a statement within 24 hours, saying “no single individual spokesperson for the presidency.”
Onanuga also announced Bwala’s re-designation as special adviser on policy communication, meaning Bwala will now work outside the presidential villa.
During a Channels Television interview on Monday, Bwala addressed speculation about his new role.
He affirmed having a great working relationship with the president and noted that defending the administration is simple for those knowledgeable about government operations.
“I have never been demoted. I have an absolutely good relationship with the president, and I’m happy doing my job,” Bwala said.
“To defend this government, in my view, is the easiest thing to do because you speak to facts, be honest with Nigerians, and then be ready to counter any negative narrative or agenda-driven narrative.
“So, once these three things (clarity, honesty, and thorough research) are very clear to you and you have done your research, it is very easy.”
