Rampaging armed non-state actors terrorising Nigeria’s northern region have struck again in Zamfara State.
No fewer than 46 residents of the state were kidnapped when the gunmen attacked Gana town.
Among those abducted during the attack around 10p.m. on Sunday are women and children, according to reports.
The assaillants were said to have stormed the town on motorbikes, shooting sporadically and setting several homes and businesses ablaze.
Locals said area was enveloped in turmoil and pandemonium as resident fled into nearby bushes to escape the gunmen.
The assailants reportedly carried out a house-to-house search, abducting those who were unable to flee, particularly targeting women and children.
This incident follows a similar attack last month in which at least 43 people were abducted by gunmen in Kakidawa, located in the Gidan Goga district of Maradun Local Government Area in Zamfara.
In recent weeks, there has been an upsurge in kidnappings for ransom, with criminals increasingly targeting vulnerable communities in northern Nigeria.
The troubling security situation has raised concerns about the safety and security of residents in the region.
Meanwhile, Nigerian military troops have made laudable inroads in its effort to tackle terrorism in Zamfara. Last month, troops reportedly killed several terrorists in Tsafe Local Government Area after intelligence operations led to a raid on multiple terrorist hideouts.
Despite these efforts, the region still grapples with deepening security crisis with armed groups engaged in criminal activities, including kidnappings and terrorism
