- Senator Shuaib Afolabi Salisu emphasizes a thorough review of the ₦49.7 trillion 2025 budget proposal, avoiding rushed passage by lawmakers
- The Senate aims to ensure the budget aligns with national priorities, focusing on effective resource allocation and economic growth opportunities
The Chairman of the Senate Committee on ICT and Cybercrime, Senator Shuaib Afolabi Salisu, has stated that the National Assembly is prioritizing a thorough review of the 2025 budget proposal rather than rushing its passage.
Speaking in Ilaro, Ogun State, during the New Year party hosted by Senator Solomon Adeola, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriation, Salisu explained that adhering strictly to the January-December budget cycle might hinder lawmakers from carefully scrutinizing the budget.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu presented a ₦49.7 trillion budget proposal for the 2025 fiscal year to enhance macroeconomic stability, reduce poverty, foster economic growth, improve human capital development, and address insecurity.
However, Salisu emphasized the importance of a detailed review, noting that the budget document spans approximately 3,000 pages. “We deliberately decided not to rush the passage of this budget.
We want to ensure every aspect is critically examined to allocate resources effectively. For instance, the Southwest Development Commission is expected to receive a significant portion of the budget,” he said.
Reflecting on the past year, Salisu acknowledged challenges but described them as opportunities for economic recovery and growth.
Meanwhile, the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Iziaq Adekunle Salako, reassured Nigerians of the government’s commitment to expanding health coverage.
He highlighted President Tinubu’s dedication to achieving Universal Health Coverage for all Nigerians, regardless of social status.
The Senate’s approach underscores its commitment to ensuring that the 2025 budget aligns with national priorities and addresses critical issues effectively.
