On Tuesday night, Newcastle United claimed a crucial 2-0 victory against Arsenal in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semifinal at the Emirates Stadium.
The Magpies, who have never won the competition, are now on the verge of reaching their second final in three seasons. They need to avoid defeat or lose by no more than one goal in the second leg scheduled for February 5 to advance.
Arsenal, currently second in the Premier League, started the tie as favourites but now face a challenging task in the return leg to keep their hopes alive.
Alexander Isak opened the scoring for Newcastle in the 37th minute, netting his 14th goal in just 15 games this season. His strike gave the visitors the lead and marked their seventh consecutive victory.
Anthony Gordon sealed the win in the 51st minute, converting a rebound after Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya parried Isak’s initial shot.
Meanwhile, Tottenham Hotspur will face Liverpool in the other semifinal on Wednesday. The competition’s final is set to take place at Wembley Stadium on March 16.
