- The House of Representatives commits to thoroughly reviewing the N49.74 trillion 2025 Appropriation Bill, prioritizing national interests and accountability
- Deputy Spokesperson Philip Agbese emphasizes the need for MDAs to justify budget compliance, ensuring effective use of taxpayer funds
The House of Representatives has vowed to carefully examine the proposed 2025 Appropriation Bill, amounting to N49.74 trillion. Lawmakers have assured Nigerians of a detailed review aimed at advancing national interests.
Philip Agbese, Deputy Spokesperson of the House, made this known on Tuesday in Abuja. He emphasized the parliament’s commitment to ensuring the budget aligns with the nation’s priorities.
“The proposed budget by Mr. President will undergo thorough scrutiny before its passage,” Agbese stated. “As an independent arm of government, it is our duty to evaluate the executive’s proposals and make decisions that serve the country’s best interests.”
He further highlighted the House’s dedication to meeting deadlines. “Last year, we shortened our holiday to finalize the 2024 budget. Similarly, we’ve started working on the 2025 budget with the Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs),” he noted.
Agbese praised the Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas, for prioritizing the welfare of Nigerians. “The 10th House is committed to ensuring this budget addresses critical sectors like security, health, education, job creation, and youth empowerment,” he said.
Regarding accountability, Agbese revealed a rigorous framework for MDAs during budget defenses. “MDAs must prove compliance with previous budgets, demonstrate alignment with the President’s vision, and justify their capacity to utilize taxpayer funds effectively,” he explained.
He stressed that agencies failing to meet these standards would face consequences. “Agencies not adhering to due process will not receive allocations for capital projects in 2025,” he warned.
The House Committee on Appropriations Chairman, Abubakar Bichi, has also engaged with committee chairmen to ensure a robust review process. Budget defense sessions began on Tuesday, and various MDAs presented their estimates.
The House reaffirmed its resolve to prioritize transparency, accountability, and the collective good of Nigerians as it works to finalize the budget.
