The Enugu State Government has announced plans to build an Olympic-size swimming pool at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Sports Stadium and undertake major refurbishments to upgrade its sports infrastructure.
Barr. Loyld Ekweremadu, the state’s Commissioner for Sports, revealed the development in a statement issued by the Ministry’s Director of Press, Dan Onwuegbuna.
According to Ekweremadu, the government will also rehabilitate the stadium’s indoor hall and enhance facilities at the state sports council headquarters in preparation for hosting the 2026 National Sports Festival.
“The government has allocated N10 billion for refurbishing the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium and N3 billion for upgrading the Awgu Games Village,” Ekweremadu stated.
“Additionally, N200 million has been earmarked for improving the facilities at the Sports Council on Nkpokiti Road, Independence Layout, Enugu.”
Ekweremadu highlighted the state’s commitment to boosting sports development and attracting global events.
He mentioned ongoing discussions with a reputable consultant to organize an international marathon in 2025, expected to attract athletes worldwide.
The Commissioner further emphasized the state’s dedication to creating an enabling environment for sports enthusiasts and fostering youth development through enhanced sports infrastructure.
