- The Nigerian Air Force denied claims that 16 civilians were killed in an airstrike, emphasizing their commitment to minimizing civilian harm
- NAF’s Director stated that the airstrikes were based on verified intelligence, dismissing allegations as potential propaganda from terrorists and sympathizers
The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has refuted claims that 16 civilians were killed during an airstrike targeting insurgents in Tungar Kara, Maradun Local Government Area, Zamfara State.
A report published by Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency platform focused on the Lake Chad region, alleged that members of the Zamfara Community Protection Guard (ZCPG), vigilantes, and local residents were among the casualties.
The vigilantes were reportedly mistaken for bandits while fleeing the scene.
“So far, 16 bodies have been recovered, though the exact number of casualties remains unclear,” the report claimed.
However, NAF’s Director of Public Relations and Information, Olusola Akinboyewa, dismissed the allegations in a statement to TheCable. He emphasized the force’s commitment to minimizing harm to civilians during operations.
“The Nigerian Air Force employs all possible measures to prevent, minimize, and mitigate harm to civilians during combat missions,” Akinboyewa stated.
“These claims may be propaganda from terrorists and their sympathizers, aiming to discredit military operations.”
He clarified that the airstrikes were based on verified intelligence to repel ongoing bandit attacks in the area.
“Our operations rely on credible and multiple verified intelligence sources, subjected to confirmatory analysis,” Akinboyewa added.
“As of now, no credible reports indicate civilian casualties. Should any developments arise, the public will be informed accordingly.”
The air component of Operation Fansan Yamma continues its mission to combat banditry and protect local communities in the region.
