- The APC chieftain said that events of the last three months had also suggested that Obasa’s days were numbered.
A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Fouad Oki, has said Mudashiru Obasa’s impeachment as Lagos state house of assembly speaker was necessary to hold him accountable.
Oki shared his thoughts on Monday’s Politics Today programme on Channels Television, following Obasa’s impeachment.
Earlier, Obasa was removed as speaker due to allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office.
The 52-year-old lawmaker, representing Agege state constituency I, became speaker in 2015 and was serving his third term.
Mojisola Meranda, the deputy speaker, was elected to lead the house.
According to Oki, Obasa’s impeachment was foreseeable, given his perceived arrogance, having begun to see himself as an “emperor”.
Oki noted that events over the last three months indicated Obasa’s days were numbered.
“He saw himself as an emperor,” Oki said.
“A change in leadership was necessary, evident in the last 18 months.”
Oki recalled the governor’s presentation of the 2025 appropriation bill, where Obasa kept the governor and party leaders waiting for hours.
“No apologies or excuses were offered, and courtesies were ignored,” Oki said.
“This displayed an irresponsible attitude, requiring his excesses to be checked.”
Oki stated that the impeachment served President Bola Tinubu’s best interest, ensuring Lagos remained pivotal in his political leadership.
“Before the president’s return, this issue lingered,” Oki said. “The president’s attention was called, and he met with party elders.”
“The president saw a recalcitrant, which broke the camel’s back,” Oki concluded.
