  • The lawmaker noted that Tinubu is one of his mentors, while reiterating his commitment to constructive criticism for the betterment of Nigeria.

The senator representing Borno South, Ali Ndume, on Tuesday expressed admiration for President Bola Tinubu, clarifying that his criticism is targeted at policies, not the president personally.

Ndume stated on Politics Today, a Channels TV program, that he has only spoken out against specific policies implemented by the president.

The Borno senator previously attributed the country’s economic hardship to “some advisers” surrounding the president.

Ndume’s strong opposition also focused on tax reform bills sent by the president to the national assembly, which led him to consider leaving the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Despite this, Ndume acknowledged Tinubu as a mentor and reaffirmed his commitment to constructive criticism for Nigeria’s betterment.

“I am not criticising the President but his policies. I am not a critic of this government, it is our government,” Ndume said.

“In all of my critics, I don’t criticise my elders. Tinubu is my senior, I respect him, though I disagree with him in some cases…but he is surrounded with….., I don’t want to use another word that will cause me another suspension.”

“I criticise policies, not Tinubu. I criticised the policies of Buhari, but I’m closer to Tinubu than Buhari.”

Regarding a viral photo of him and Tinubu, Ndume shared that the president inquired about his infrequent visits to the Aso Villa.

“The president is one of my mentors, he only said that why do I not come to the Villa.”

Ndume also mentioned that Tinubu attended his daughter’s wedding, despite coinciding with the Nigerian Army Remembrance Day.

Speaking on insurgency attacks in the north-west, Ndume advocated for additional attack helicopters to reduce insecurity.

The lawmaker expressed confidence in the Nigerian army’s capabilities but emphasized the need for increased funding.
