The Nigeria Police Force has arrested four individuals involved in counterfeit currency operations in Kano and Nasarawa states, recovering fake notes worth billions of naira.
Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, disclosed the arrests in a statement, noting the recovery of $3.5 million, ₦1.4 million, and 51,970 CFA Franc counterfeit notes.
In a major breakthrough on December 8, 2024, in Gwale, Kano, police apprehended Nura Ibrahim, seizing counterfeit currency amounting to ₦129.5 billion. This included $3,366,000, 51,970 CFA Franc, and ₦1,443,000. Ibrahim’s arrest led to the apprehension of accomplices Muhammed Muntari and Usman Abdullahi.
In another operation on January 13, 2025, operatives in New Karu, Nasarawa State, arrested Ephraim Barde, 53, with counterfeit $160,000 in his possession. Investigations are ongoing to uncover his network and identify additional suspects.
ACP Adejobi emphasized the police’s commitment to safeguarding Nigeria’s financial system and combating financial crimes. He also announced the establishment of the Police Anti-Money Laundering Units, led by CP Hyacinth Azuka Edozie, to counter the growing sophistication of financial crimes, including those used to fund terrorism.
The Inspector General of Police urged citizens to report suspicious activities related to counterfeit currency and financial crimes, stressing the importance of collective efforts in ensuring national security.
