The deputy chief whip of the house of representatives, Adewunmi Onanuga, has passed away, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and service.
Akin Rotimi, spokesperson for the lower legislative chamber, announced Onanuga’s passing in a statement on Wednesday night, revealing she died after a brief illness.
Rotimi shared the official statement, which reads: “It is with profound sorrow that the House of Representatives announces the passing of Rt. Hon. Adewunmi Oriyomi Onanuga.”
Onanuga was born on December 2, 1965, and first elected to the house in 2019 under the All Progressives Congress (APC) platform.
She chaired the house committee on women affairs and social development in the 9th assembly and later became the deputy chief whip of the 10th assembly after her reelection in 2023.
Rotimi praised Onanuga, saying: “Affectionately known as ‘Ijaya’—Rep’. Onanuga’s intellect, passion, humility, and drive for excellence earned her admiration among her colleagues and constituents alike.”
