Northerners were misled on tax bills, says Nasarawa governor

The presidency, on October 31, 2024, assured the northern governors that the proposed laws were not recommended by Tinubu to disadvantage any part of the country as they were designed to improve the lives of Nigerians and optimise existing tax frameworks.

  • President Bola Tinubu requested the national assembly to pass four tax reform bills on October 13, 2024.
  • The proposed laws include the Nigeria Tax Bill, Tax Administration Bill, and Joint Revenue Board Establishment Bill.

Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa state has said that the northerners were misinformed about tax reform bills, believing they would lead to extra financial burdens.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Sule said the endorsed tax reforms aim to eliminate inefficiencies and create a fairer tax system.

Sule dispelled notions of a divide between northern governors and President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

“Most of the people in the North have been sold the idea that there are going to be additional taxes. Today, by this agreement, there is no additional tax,” Sule said.

“Definitely it will settle the dust because most of the people in the North have been sold the idea that there are going to be additional taxes.

“We are saying today that by this, there are no additional taxes.

“People who want to create divisions between the president and others can now rest easy, understanding that their actions are in Nigeria’s interest.”

Recall that on Thursday, the Nigeria Governors’ Forum’s (NGF) endorsed the proposed tax legislation currently under consideration at the national assembly.

The NGF proposed a fair sharing formula for Value-Added Tax (VAT) after meeting with the Presidential Tax Reform Committee.

The governors recommended removing terminal clauses for TETFUND, NASENI, and NITDA when sharing development levies.
