The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has called for an urgent investigation into allegations of record backdating involving seven senior officers, including the Head of INTERPOL National Central Bureau (NCB), AIG Idowu Owohunwa.
A memo signed by AIG Olofu Rhoda, Force Secretary, and dated January 13, 2025, directed the IGP Monitoring Unit to investigate the allegations and report their findings by January 20, 2025.
The officers under investigation include AIG Idowu Owohunwa, AIG Abdul Yari, AIG Ben Igwe, CP Peter Ukachi Opara, CP Obo Obo Ukani, DCP Simon Asamber Lough (SAN), and ACP Akpan Brown.
The probe follows a letter dated January 6, 2025, from the Integrity Youth Alliance, a civic group based in Abuja, which raised concerns over the officers’ alleged unethical practice.
According to the memo, the officers allegedly manipulated their service records under the “Force Entrant” scheme. This programme allows officers with specific qualifications to be upgraded to higher ranks without restarting their service duration, as stipulated by the Public Service Rules.
The memo highlighted that these officers had exceeded the legally permitted service duration, despite continuing to receive salaries in violation of regulations.
The IGP has demanded a thorough review of the case, emphasising accountability within the Nigeria Police Force.
