- The incident reportedly began after the student, whose name was withheld, sought to transfer to a different department but was informed that her grades did not meet the requirements
A lecturer at Kano State Polytechnic, Aliyu Hamza Abdullahi, was attacked on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, allegedly by the boyfriend of a female student whose admission request was declined.
The institution’s Public Relations Officer, Auwal Ismail Bagwai, disclosed during a press briefing on Friday that the assault occurred in Abdullahi’s office around 2 pm while he was attending to students.
The incident reportedly began after the student, whose name was withheld, sought to transfer to a different department but was informed that her grades did not meet the requirements. Frustrated, she allegedly blamed Abdullahi, the department’s exam officer, and summoned her boyfriend.
“The student and her boyfriend entered the office, identifying the lecturer as the obstacle to her desired course. The boyfriend then attacked the lecturer with a cutlass, targeting his head,” Bagwai said.
Abdullahi sustained hand injuries while defending himself, as other students in the office intervened, forcing the assailants to flee.
The lecturer is currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital, Bagwai added.
Efforts by the institution’s security team to apprehend the suspects were met with resistance in the Dorayi area of the state, where they encountered a group of thugs.
Although the student and her boyfriend remain at large, Bagwai assured that security agencies are actively investigating the case, vowing that the perpetrators will be brought to justice.
