There was chaos in Lagos on Friday when a middle-aged trader was killed by a Lagos-Ibadan train near the Arena Shopping Complex in Oshodi.
The incident, which occurred around 2 pm, drew a crowd of sympathisers and onlookers to the scene.
Eyewitnesses reported that the trader, identified as a shop owner in a nearby shopping complex, was standing on the railway tracks, using an earpiece while urinating. Despite loud warnings from bystanders and the train’s horn, he failed to move in time.
“He was chatting on the phone with three others who were also on the tracks, but they ran off when they heard the train’s horn. Unfortunately, he didn’t,” a witness explained.
The man’s body remained near his shop as efforts were made to contact his family. Police have reportedly been informed to evacuate the corpse.
A source from the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) confirmed the incident but noted that the victim’s identity was yet to be verified.
Cases of train accidents have become frequent along the Lagos corridor due to human activities on the railway tracks. In areas like Agbado, Agege, Ikeja, and Oshodi, traders often display wares on the tracks, moving hastily when trains approach, despite the risks involved.
Lagos Police spokesperson Ben Hundeyin was yet to comment on the incident as of the time of reporting.
